Celebrity Surrogacy Stories in the Media

For a long time, surrogacy, wasn’t something that was talked much about in the media. A few TV shows would sometimes touch on the topic, but it was never fully discussed. But thanks to some celebrities and their willingness to tell us about their struggles to start a family, many of us now know that we are not alone. Whether they are having troubles with infertility, are a gay couple or are just ready to start their family, they let us in on the details of their journeys.

Maybe one of the best recognized stories of surrogacy right now is Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West. After carrying her first two children, both being difficult pregnancies for her, doctors advised her not to carry any more children. For her third pregnancy West chose to use a gestational surrogate. After the birth of her third child via surrogacy, West took to her app to thank her surrogate saying, “We are incredibly grateful to our surrogate who made our dreams come true with the greatest gift one could give...” In January 2019 she released that she and Kanye were expecting their fourth child via a surrogate as well.

On January 20, 2019 Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live” host Andy Cohen let his viewers know that he himself was expecting a child via surrogacy. He went on to say, “Tonight, I want you to be the first to know that after many years of careful deliberation, a fair amount of prayers and the benefit of science- if all goes according to plan in about six weeks’ time, I’m going to become a father.”

Famed soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo had two of his four children via surrogacy. After the birth of his twins he took to Instagram to say, “So happy to be able to hold the two new loves of my life.” NBA star Dwyane Wade and his actress wife Gabrielle Union welcomed their “miracle baby” via a surrogate November 07, 2018. After trying to conceive naturally, many rounds of IVF, multiple miscarriages and failed implants, Union and Wade decided a surrogate was the way to go to have their baby girl.

TV host Giuliana Rancic and her husband, Bill, featured their struggles with infertility after Giuliana’s battle with breast cancer and how they chose to have a surrogate carry their son Duke on their reality TV show. They tried to have another baby with their surrogate but sadly she miscarried with their last embryo.

These are just a few of the celebrities that have used a surrogate to grow their families, and each one is for a different reason.
