4 Reasons to Become a Surrogate
You know all the kind-hearted reasons you should become a surrogate, right? And, of course, you are well aware that you are making someone’s dream come true by helping them grow a family that they might otherwise not be able to. It’s the most incredible gift imaginable, and that alone is the driving factor behind most women’s decision to become a surrogate. Some people just like helping other people…they get a high from it. Here are 4 other reasons that women become a surrogate.
You love being pregnant: No, really. Some women really enjoy this. I personally had 4 pregnancies and 3 babies, and they were not easy, but hey, more power to those of you who had a great pregnancy experience. So if you’re one of those unicorns who were okay with the weight gain, frequent urination and morning sickness, then gestational surrogacy might be for you, my friend! Because those women don’t see those negative things…they see the miracle of growing another human, the magic of feeling the kicks and the beauty of the bump.
Birth is your jam: Some women think of birth and their first thoughts are, “When can I get an epidural,” “I don’t want to poop on the table,” and “I just want to get it over with.” Other women are powerhouse bosses, and giving birth is one of the most empowering moments of their life. I will say, of my 3 births—the first being a c-section, the second a VBAC with an epidural and the third an unmedicated VBAC—my favorite was the third. Most certainly NOT at the time. But after, oh wow. I felt SO powerful—like I could literally do anything. It was one of the most amazing moments of my life, and with every trial in my life, I think back on that moment and know that if I can do that, I can do anything.
You’ve seen the infertility struggle: It generally only takes knowing one person who has struggled with infertility to see the pain they go through. Watching someone go through that struggle of desperately wanting a child and not being able to have one is awful. Especially when you have children and know what a gift they are. When you see someone go through this, you want to help them. Sometimes it’s not possible to help them, but sometimes it is. Some people are willing to actually grow a baby for this person — and THAT is why surrogates are truly amazing.
The extra bacon: Who couldn’t use a little extra money. Sometimes people think talking about surrogate compensation is taboo, but we don’t. This person is doing a lot. I mean…a lot. They deserve to be compensated, although that isn’t their main motivation. It’s nice to have some extra cash to take a fun family trip (the surrogate’s family goes through a lot too), put a down payment on a house, pay off some debt, buy a car, put toward your children’s college fund or just to put in savings.
No matter what the reason someone does surrogacy, the bottom line is, they are amazing and have huge hearts. Some of these women are helping friends and family and some are helping complete strangers that they have met only over video chat.
