My Sibling Surrogacy Journey
When I initially sought out to be a surrogate, I had only given thought to do this one time. I was already “older” at 39 and it just never crossed my mind that I would have more than one surrogacy journey. I am so glad life had a different plan for me.
The “strange” bond that develops between intended parents and their surrogate feels very much like a “love affair” to your heart and mind. Once I built this amazing relationship with my intended fathers during our first surrogacy journey, I came to realize that watching another woman carry their 2nd baby would feel like torcher. By torcher, I mean it would feel like *if * we were in this great relationship and they broke it off and moved on from it …all the while I was still very much in love but had to watch them fall in love and bond with another woman. I know…sounds a bit dramatic, but it’s true.
Therefore, when I was about 6 months pregnant with their first baby and they asked me how I felt about doing another journey with them, my first thought was, “oh no, I’m too old….I may have even said it out loud, but the words that came next are what really hit me. They said they knew that they wanted to have a 2nd baby and couldn’t imagine anyone else carrying it. My heart fluttered and immediately I felt what they were feeling, and I knew that I *couldn’t let* anyone else carry their baby!
So, fast forward to the birth of the 1st baby, sweet Louise, that didn’t go quite as planned. I think they panicked a little bit thinking I wouldn’t be up for it again. But oh no, not even an unplanned C-section was going to stop me from being their surrogate. About 2 ½ years later, adorable Theodore was born via planned C-section and everything was perfect, even with me at the ripe old age of 41 (4 days before turning 42). The 2nd journey is so much more relaxed because everyone already knows what to expect from the process and what to expect from each other. I didn’t even need my own support person for the delivery of Theodore, as I knew they were going to be all the support I needed.
