What if I miscarry a surrogacy pregnancy?

Unfortunately, surrogacy pregnancy, like any other pregnancy, comes with the risk of miscarriage. The conversation about possible miscarriage will have already happened during the matching process, psychological screening, and legal phase. During these phases, the intended parents and gestational carrier will talk about how everyone would like to proceed in the case of miscarriage and whether they would attempt another embryo transfer if the intended parents have another embryo. Every surrogacy journey is different, so how the intended parents and gestational carrier proceed will vary.

If a subsequent transfer will be done, it will need to be at a time when the gestational carrier is physically and emotionally ready. Certain factors may warrant more time before attempting another transfer, such as the previous pregnancy and how far along the gestational carrier was in the pregnancy. It’s important to remember that a miscarriage itself does not affect the ability to become pregnant again. Of course, we are here to support all parties during this painful time.
